BIOL 363 - Mycology(4cr) This upper-level lecture and laboratory course will provide a broad introduction to the Kingdom Fungi. Fungi decay organic matter and recycle nutrients. The growth of vascular plants is enhanced by symbiotic fungi (mycorrhizae). Many important antibiotics and other compounds are produced by fungi. Fungi cause diseases of plants, animals, and humans; some of these diseases have had profound effects on the course of human history. In addition to the general biology and taxonomy of fungi, this course will address the roles of fungi in ecology, industry, medicine, research, agriculture, and food production. Prerequisites: BIOL 211 and BIOL 212 ; or permission of instructor.
