Global Studies at Shepherd University is an interdisciplinary program combining courses in the social sciences, natural sciences, arts, humanities, and professional fields. It is designed for students seeking knowledge and analysis of global issues and a more in-depth understanding of today’s interdependent world.
This program prepares students to excel in cross-cultural, multilingual environments by providing them with 2nd language skills and knowledge of history, geography, politics, economics, business, culture, the arts and a broad range of global issues.
With completion of the program, students will have:
- Acquired multidisciplinary knowledge to engage with contemporary and enduring global issues.
- Developed global and civic knowledge and intercultural competence with respect to global cultures and societies.
- Had opportunities to engage in multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and crossdisciplinary research, and connect to a broad professional network through global internship and study abroad programs.
- Prepared for international service careers and graduate studies through rigorous academic coursework and experiential learning.

Curriculum for a Major in Global Studies
The Core Curriculum has both required and recommended courses for the Global Studies major. Global Learning (GL) and other courses with international focus are recommended. In addition to the Core Curriculum and Global Studies required core courses, students will select a concentration for focused study, study a foreign language, engage in an international experience, select regional courses, and complete research methods and capstone courses. Specific Core Curriculum Requirements: - PSCI 100 is required for all Global Studies students.
Students should work closely with an academic advisor for selection of appropriate courses. Total Hours required, 42 Hours:

Restricted Elective Options, 15 Hours:
Students may choose either to design a 15-credit concentration* (by contract with the advisor and department chair), or to complete 15 credits from a list of restricted electives. Students choosing not to design a concentration* will complete 15 credits from the following list of restricted electives. At least 6 credits must be in PSCI. Notes:
* Students choosing to design their own concentration will develop a contract signed by their advisor and their department chair, approving the title of the concentration and specifying which courses will count toward the concentration. A copy of the agreement must be filed with the Office of the Registrar, as well as any amendments thereafter. Language The student is required to complete 12 semester hours in the same foreign language OR demonstrate competence in that language by achieving a score specified by the department on a standardized language examination and by passing an interview with the modern language faculty. International Experience Each student will participate in an international experience appropriate to his or her concentration and/or language study for the major. The international experience must be outside the U.S., approved in advance by the department chair, and be part of a program or partnership authorized by Shepherd University. An international experience may take a variety of forms, e.g., semester abroad or at sea; summer immersion courses; teaching practicum; international volunteer work; and an international internship.
