The social studies program is intended primarily for students preparing to teach in middle or high schools. These curricula provide a multi-disciplinary foundation for prospective teachers who enter integrated social studies educational situations.
Program goals
- To identify concepts, tools of inquiry and trends within the field of social studies.
- To adapt instruction to various learning styles and cultural backgrounds.
- To use diverse instructional strategies, including technology, that highlight critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- To organize and create lessons based upon content knowledge, curriculum goals, and state/national standards.
- To create formal and informal assessment strategies related to their planning and instruction.
- To demonstrate knowledge in social studies disciplines (history, political science, geography, sociology, economics, and psychology)
- To conduct instruction, planning, and assessments in social studies classrooms via multiple field experiences.
- To successfully apply for state licensure to teach social studies in grades 5-12 in the state of West Virginia.
