Nutrition Comprehensive, B.S.


The Nutrition program provides students experience in dietetics. This interdisciplinary degree program includes subject areas in food, nutrition, and management. An integral part of the program also includes core topics in the practice of dietetics. The program encompasses principles of problem solving and critical thinking, scientific and mathematical concepts (i.e., calculating macronutrient distribution ranges), cultural competencies (i.e., socio-historical background of diverse populations to provide the appropriate nutrition intervention) and the use of relevant technologies (i.e., dietary and nutrient analysis software).

These skills are highly desired and utilized in various consumer and healthcare settings such as management positions in clinical, acute care settings, home health agencies, assisted living and long-term care facilities, community nutrition, and in food service and restaurant establishments. Basic topics in management such as finance and economics and business administration as well as courses in psychology are included to provide a well-rounded experience for students.

Program Learning Outcomes
  1. Graduates will become competent, entry-level nutrition and dietetic professionals, to meet employment needs of the state and nation.
  2. Prepare graduates who demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and servicing the community and the profession.

Curriculum for a Comprehensive Major in Nutrition


The Nutrition program is a comprehensive major consisting of a minimum of 120 credits, in which 50 credits are in upper-division courses. Upper division courses specialize in advance health and dietetics, which include capstone, research, and experiential learning opportunities. Similar to programs offered at Shepherd University, courses required during the first half of the program fulfill core curriculum and basic nutrition course requirements, in order to build a strong foundation in technical dietetics and applied nutrition.

Students must remain in satisfactory standing to complete the Nutrition program. Graduation requirements include a 2.0 cumulative GPA and minimum grade of “C” in all core and elective classes.
