CRIM 420 - Victimology

(3cr) This course is designed to examine victimology, victimization, victim services, and victim advocacy. Victimology is the scientific study of crime victims and focuses on the physical, emotional, and financial harm victims suffer due to the crime. This course will explore victimology and assess the impact of victimization through victimological theories, available data, and trauma and recovery process. In exploring these connections, this course analyzes the victim-offender relationships and the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system, such as law enforcement, the courts, corrections, and the juvenile justice system, advocacy groups, and government. Additionally, this course includes effective responses to specific crime victims, including victims of family violence, sexual assault, and cyber-crime. Challenges of victim assistance and multicultural competency issues are also covered.
