CNSL 550 - Expressive Therapies

(3cr) This course introduces students to the theory, practices, and applications of expressive arts therapies within mental health counseling. Emphasizing multimodal arts-based interventions, the course explores how visual arts, dance/movement, drama, music, poetry, and other creative modalities can facilitate healing, self-awareness, and social change. Students examine the historical development of expressive therapies, foundational concepts, and ethical considerations. Through experiential activities, case studies, and reflective assignments, students learn to incorporate expressive arts techniques into clinical practice with individuals, groups, and communities. The course aims to foster creative competency, cultural responsiveness, and innovative approaches to mental health treatment in diverse settings.
