CNSL 515 - Alcohol and Drug Counseling

(3cr) This course provides graduate students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in the assessment, treatment, and recovery support of individuals with substance use disorders, including alcohol and drug addictions. Topics include diagnostic criteria, behavioral treatment modalities, crisis intervention, relapse prevention, and co-occurring disorders. Students explore the ethical, legal, and cultural considerations unique to substance abuse counseling and recovery-oriented systems of care. Emphasis is placed on collaborative treatment planning, community resource utilization, and motivational interviewing techniques tailored for diverse populations. This course prepares students to meet licensure and certification requirements and supports their development as competent, ethical professionals in addiction counseling.
