BIOL 240 - Microbiology for the Health Sciences

(4 cr) This course presents the basic concepts of microbiology with an emphasis on the application of microbiology to human health and disease. Major topics include structure, growth, metabolism, and genetics of microorganisms; pathogenesis and infectious disease epidemiology; immunology; control of microbial growth; and prevention and treatment of infectious disease. The laboratory component complements the lecture and introduces students to aseptic techniques, microbial control measures, and lab techniques for identification of microorganisms. This course provides foundational knowledge in microbiology, immunology, and infectious disease for students interested in nursing and allied health. This course may not be used as an elective for Biology majors. Prerequisites: CHEM 122 and CHEM 122L; or CHEM 125 and CHEM 125L; or CHEM 208 and 208L; or PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR.
