SOWK 417 - Sex and Gender in Contemporary Society (3 cr) This course explores the social construction of sex, gender, and sexuality and examines how these identities influence individuals and social systems. Emphasis is placed on the diverse and evolving experiences of people across the gender spectrum, with attention to how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, ability and other dimensions of identity. Students critically analyze how changing understandings of gender impact social norms, institutions, and policies. Special attention is given to the implications for social work practice, including advocacy, ethical engagement, and culturally responsive approaches with individuals, families, and communities. Lecture content is integrated experiential material in the form of in-class activities and discussions. A foundational understanding of sociological or social work concepts is expected. Prerequisites: SOCI 203 or permission of instructor.
