SOCI 322 - Social Theory

(3 cr) This course introduces student to the foundations of social thought that shaped sociology and criminology as disciplines. Students explore competing philosophical approaches to knowledge-positivism and idealism-along with foundational debates such as nature versus nurture, individual versus society, and the role of social construction in shaping behavior and shared knowledge. These epistemological frameworks form the basis for analyzing major classical theorists, including Comte, Spencer, Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, and Mead, whose ideas on human nature, inequality, deviance, and social order remain central to contemporary sociological and criminological thinking. Previously numbered SOCI 410. Prerequisites: SOCI 203 .
