CPE 421 - Computer Architecture(3 cr) Topics include information representation, tags, check bits, floating-point arithmetic, instruction sets, RISC vs CISC, ALU design, bit slicing, microprogrammed control, microinstruction types, microprogram optimization, cache memories, interleaved memories, communication methods, bus control and timing, input-output, programmed I/O, interrupts and DMA, parallel and vector processors, pipelines, shared vs distributed memory, interconnection networks, and hypercube computers. Prerequisites: CPE 386 and CPE /ENGR 305 ; or permission of instructor.
