You may apply to the combined 4+1 Bachelors/M.A. in APST Program when you have completed 60 undergraduate hours with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Undergraduates should complete the online Graduate Admissions Application and all individual program requirements listed for M.A. - Appalachian Studies: https://www.shepherd.edu/maas/prospective-students-2
Students already approved or considering the undergraduate minor or interdisciplinary major in Appalachian Studies program should work closely with their advisors and department chairs for the appropriate courses to use at the undergraduate level. The Appalachian History, Culture, and Heritage MA concentration complements the minor in Appalachian Studies most closely.
The Shepherd University Accelerated (4+1) program for the Master of Arts in Appalachian Studies (MA-APST) degree allows interested and qualified students to complete any Bachelor’s degree and the MA-APST in as few as five years. Students in the Accelerated (4+1) program focus on their Bachelor’s degree requirements during their first two years, a mix of Bachelor’s and MA-APST requirements in the third and fourth years, and remaining MA-APST requirements in the subsequent semesters. Each degree is awarded once the specific degree requirements are successfully met.
Students need to work closely with their advisor to make sure they are selecting coursework that covers both undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. Additionally, students are highly encouraged to meet with the University’s Financial Aid Office since financial assistance (whether in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, etc.) is unique to each student/family situation.
The following graduate courses are highly recommended to meet the requirements of Appalachian Studies minor and the MA - APST, Appalachian History, Culture, and Heritage Concentration. Other courses within the MA - APST may be used to satisfy undergraduate requirements with the approval of both the undergraduate advisor and the MA-APST program coordinator.
