  • MUSC 235 - Jazz Techniques

    (1 cr) This course presents students with an overview of the current methods and materials of jazz education including rehearsal techniques, improvisation pedagogy, concert programming, jazz history, and repertoire. As a workshop experience, students will apply rehearsal techniques by conducting the Lab Band in rehearsal. Previously titled MUSC 308 Jazz Pedagogy (2cr); also previously MUSC 308 Jazz Techniques (1cr). Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor; MUSC 103  and MUSC 104 .
  
  • MUSC 237 - Diction I

    (3 cr) This course is designed for vocal performance and choral music education majors and covers instruction in and application of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in the four basic singing languages, Italian, English, German, and French. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 238 - Vocal Performance Technique

    (1 cr) Detailed study of vocal performance technique. Topics covered will include preparation, stage presence, and stylistic considerations for a wide variety of solo vocal repertoire. Permission of instructor. This course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 245 - Jazz Theory and Improvisation

    (2cr) This course is designed as an introduction to Jazz Theory and its application in the practice of jazz improvisation. Topics covered include chord reading, melodic vocabulary, harmonic voice-leading, chord-scale relationships, improvisation practice strategies, and solo transcription in the context of standard jazz repertoire.  Previously offered as a 1-credit course. Course is repeatable once, to a maximum of 4 credits.
  
  • MUSC 247 - Diction II

    (3 cr) This course will continue the exploration of the International Phonetic Alphabet and its application to foreign language diction for musicians. French, German, and Italian diction will be studied with an emphasis on successful understanding of pronunciation in a performance setting. Prerequisites: MUSC 237 ; declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 280 - Performance Forum

    (1 cr) A comprehensive survey of performance history, literature, and practice. The course will include group discussion, field trips, guest artists, and mandatory concert attendance. A portfolio will be required for successful completion of this course. This course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 299 - Special Studies in Music

    (1-4 cr) Topics for special studies will be created as needed by the Music Department. This course may be repeated without limit with different topics. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 303 - Form and Analytical Techniques

    (3 cr) A multi-partite course segmented into sessions of study examining the following: 1) Pre-Classic era through Romantic era formal paradigms and their evolution; 2) a survey of pre-tonal contrapuntal techniques and the development of Baroque contrapuntal design; 3) an introduction to the principal axioms of reductive analysis, exemplified by the works of the theorist Heinrich Schenker and his followers; and 4) a primer in the analytical heuristics of post-tonal (set) theory. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor and successful completion of MUSC 103 , MUSC 104 , MUSC 105 , MUSC 106 , MUSC 203 , MUSC 204 , MUSC 205 , and MUSC 206 
  
  • MUSC 307 - Advanced Improvisation

    (2 cr) This course is intended as a continuation of MUSC 207  Basic Improvisation with increased emphasis upon the development of a personal style as well as upon more complex harmonic sequences, scales, and rhythmic-metric considerations. This course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor; MUSC 207  and completion of Keyboard Proficiency Exam.
  
  • MUSC 309 - Entrepreneurship in Music

    (2cr) This course is designed to provide students with the basic tools to build a successful career as a professional musician. Topics include building and administering a private studio, effective development and use of promotional materials, project development, funding models, basic financial management, and taxes.   • MUSC 313 - Women in Music

    (3 cr) An overview of the accomplishments of women in music from the Middle Ages to the present day. The class will investigate ways in which gender, race, and class have influenced the lives of musical women in the past and will explore the developments in the 20th century which have affected the current status of women in music. The survey will incorporate music listening assignments, paper presentations, a class lecture-recital, and visits to concerts featuring women composers an performers.   • MUSC 314 - Keyboard Literature

    (3 cr) A survey of the standard piano, organ, and harpsichord literature from the Renaissance to the present day, with special attention given to teaching literature of the major composers. The survey will incorporate listening assignments, in-class performance, and special projects such as concerts into the course content. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor with  .
  
  • MUSC 315 - History of Jazz Styles

    (3 cr) The course is a study of the historical development of jazz music through recordings and written literature.  Study includes stylistic aspects, improvisation techniques, musical concept, and performance practice.
  
  • MUSC 316 - Vocal Literature

    (3 cr) A survey of the standard art song literature for solo voice, both sacred and secular, ranging from the Renaissance through the 20th century. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 317 - Opera and Oratorio Literature

    (2 cr) The study of the evolution of the standard types of opera and oratorio. Appropriate literature for specific voice types is also studied for future teaching purposes. Attendance of opera productions in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., are scheduled for the class. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 318 - Music Theater Literature

    (2 cr) A study of the music theater literature, beginning with the 19th century influences on the genre through present day repertoire. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 319 - Workshop in Foreign Cultures

    (1-6 cr) An exposure to the artistic heritage of foreign countries is provided through a supervised study tour which also involves directed field study and an integrated series of pre-tour and post-tour lectures. One to six hours credit, depending on the length and academic content of the tour. Further details may be obtained from the department chair. Prerequisites: Declared music major or minor or member of a touring ensemble.
  
  • MUSC 320 - Studio Pedagogy

    (3 cr) This course will survey methods to provide piano and guitar instruction in the private studio and in small classroom settings. The student-pedagogue will simultaneously increase his or her own performance skills in applied lessons through developing further techniques, repertoire, multi-level analytical skills, and broad insights on style interpretation. In addition, each student will audit private lessons given by practicing teachers and work with their own student in a practicum through the Shepherd preparatory program.  Previously MUSC 320 Guitar Pedagogy (2cr).   • MUSC 322 - Instrumental Pedagogy

    (3 cr) This course is designed to acquaint the music education student with the various aspects of managing a public school instrumental music program. Philosophy, teaching methods, administration, grading, and scheduling are included. All instrumental tech classes are reviewed; therefore, it is preferable that the student have completed all instrumental tech classes prior to enrollment. Previously 2cr.   • MUSC 323 - Vocal Pedagogy

    (2 cr) This course is designed to give the student an understanding of the singing process, including the anatomy and physiology of the vocal instrument. It also encompasses comparative teaching methodologies and basic diagnosis and correction of vocal faults. The recent advances in voice medicine are covered. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 324 - Marching Band Pedagogy

    (2 cr) This course includes the organization, rehearsal procedures, street marching, field shows of all types, formation charting, and precision-drill charting for the marching band. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor; two semesters of marching band.
  
  • MUSC 325 - Choral Pedagogy

    (3 cr) This course is designed to acquaint the music education student with the various aspects of managing a public school choral music program. Also included is the construction of skill-building exercise materials for singers of differing ages and abilities. Applications of modern learning theory are emphasized. The basics of choral diction encompassing English, Latin, Italian, German, and French are covered as well as fundamental choral literature. Previously titled Choral Methods and Materials.   • MUSC 326 - General Music Pedagogy and 21st-Century Technology

    (3 cr) This course covers methods and materials of teaching general music P-12, including music education philosophy, poetry, song (especially folk song), music literacy, the classroom instrumentarium,  movement and folk dance, music listening, beginning choral music, improvisation, composition, curriculum, assessment, and special learners, through current approaches, including Kodály, Orff Schulwerk, 21st-century technology and also includes a field component.  Previously Teaching Elementary Music (2cr).   • MUSC 327 - Conducting II - Choral

    (3 cr) A study of the art, technique, and problems relative to conducting and administering choral performing organizations. While public school choral ensembles receive the majority of attention, all other choral organizations are considered. Opportunities are available for practical experiences in conducting and related field observations of area performing ensembles. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor; MUSC 203  and MUSC 227 .
  
  • MUSC 328 - Advanced Instrumental Conducting

    (1cr) A study of the art, techniques, and challenges of conducting instrumental ensembles. Score study and preparation, stylistic considerations, and development of refined techniques are central elements of this course. Opportunities are available for practical experience in conducting University ensembles and for observing area performing ensembles. Previously offered as a 3-credit course.   • MUSC 329 - Electronic Music Media

    (1 cr) This course is an introduction to the wide variety of electronic and computer music tools available to the musician. It includes an introduction to MIDI, synthesizers, sequencing, notation, and sound reinforcement tools and techniques. Analog and digital recording techniques are also covered.  Previously 2cr.   • MUSC 330 - Recording Techniques

    (2 cr) This is a hands-on recording techniques course. Topics include mike placement strategies, mixing methods, and analog, digital, and CD recording. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor;MUSC 329 .
  
  • MUSC 331 - Instrument Care and Repair

    (2 cr) Designed for the instrumental student who intends to teach. Laboratory experience in the maintenance and repair of band instruments is coupled with a general review of the performance basics. Permission of instructor.     (3cr) A survey of popular orchestral literature from the Baroque Era to present times through the study of scores, recordings, and reading assignments.

    (2cr) A survey of wind band literature from the Baroque Era to present times through the study of scores, recordings, and reading assignments.
  
  • MUSC 346 - Chamber Literature

    (2cr) A survey of popular chamber literature from the Baroque Era to present times through the study of scores, recordings, and reading assignments. This includes music written for mixed instrumental ensembles ranging from 3 to 20 players.
  
  • MUSC 350 - Music Psychology

    (3 cr) A thorough survey of the rapidly growing field of music psychology. The course is divided into three different sections that include a detailed look at various contemporary issues in the field, a discussion of contemporary research methodology, including experimental design and analysis, and an overview of landmark studies. Highly recommended for music majors and psychology majors as well as non-majors with music experience. Prerequisites: Music major or minor, or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 351 - Jazz Arranging

    (2cr) This course is designed to provide methods of arranging for small and large jazz ensembles. Includes study of notation conventions, score layout, transpositions, and voicing techniques as well as a survey of composers and arrangers in the idiom. Prerequisites: MUSC 245  or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 352 - Advanced Jazz Theory and Improvisation

    (3cr) This course is designed as a survey of contemporary jazz harmonic and melodic practices. Topics covered include harmonic substitution, advanced harmonic alteration, motivic development, contemporary modal jazz harmony, and non-traditional improvisation systems.   • MUSC 360 - Movement for Singers

    (1cr) Singers in this class will learn about the principles of stage movement and adapting one’s body appropriately to different roles and songs, without interfering with proper vocal technique.  Previously MUSC 210 (2cr).
