Curriculum for a Teaching Field in English Education 5-Adult

Total hours required for a teaching field, 39 Hours:

See course listings under Secondary Education Comprehensive, B.A. for professional courses.

Note(s):

See professional education course listings under Education: Professional Studies Course for Secondary Education (28 hours required). Special Methods of Teaching English is EDUC 421 .

In addition to the course work required for the specialization, all prospective student teachers must take the English Field Assessment and participate in at least TWO laboratory activities in language arts:  Academic Support Center Writing Tutor, Theater, Forensics, Radio, Sans Merci, The Picket, Appalachian Heritage WIR Program, Rude Mechanicals, ENGL 476 Practicum in English I , Service Learning, Global Learning or Travel, or other activity approved in advance by the specialization coordinator. It is highly recommended that at least one of lab experiences be a travel practicum, as travel offers a global perspective important for the English LA teacher. Students must have at least one practical experience tutoring in the Academic Support Center. Likewise, it is strongly recommended that students take at least one Gateway course, as the fieldtrip experience is important to the interdisciplinary nature of the LA teaching field.

Per English Language Arts NCTE Accreditation of the 5-Adult Program and Professional requirements, certain Core courses are required of all English LA majors: 1) EDUC 150  (First Year Experience Tier 1); 2) 3 hours of World Literature (Humanities Tier 2 GL); 3) EDUC 200 Foundations of American Education  and EDUC 360 Survey of Exceptional Children  (Social Sciences Tier 2, MD).
