Global Studies, B.A.

Global Studies at Shepherd University is an interdisciplinary program combining courses in the social sciences, natural sciences, arts, humanities, and professional fields. It is designed for students seeking knowledge and analysis of global issues and a more in-depth understanding of today’s interdependent world.

This program prepares students to excel in cross-cultural, multilingual environments by providing them with 2nd language skills and knowledge of history, geography, politics, economics, business, culture, the arts and a broad range of global issues.

With completion of the program, students will have:

  1. Acquired multidisciplinary knowledge to engage with contemporary and enduring global issues.
  2. Developed global and civic knowledge and intercultural competence with respect to global cultures and societies.
  3. Had opportunities to engage in multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and crossdisciplinary research, and connect to a broad professional network through global internship and study abroad programs.
  4. Prepared for international service careers and graduate studies through rigorous academic coursework and experiential learning.

 

Curriculum for a Major in Global Studies


The Core Curriculum has both required and recommended courses for the Global Studies major. Global Learning (GL) and other courses with international focus are recommended. In addition to the Core Curriculum and Global Studies required core courses, students will select a concentration for focused study, study a foreign language, engage in an international experience, select regional courses, and complete research methods and capstone courses. 

Specific Core Curriculum Requirements:

  • PSCI 100  is required for the Global Governance and Peace concentration.
  • ECON 205  is required for the Global Economics and Development concentration.
  • ENVS 201 /ENVS 201L  and ENVS 202 /ENVS 202L  are required for the Global Environments concentration.
  • GEOG 105  or ANTH 203  are required for the Global Culture in History and the Global Age concentration.

Students should work closely with an academic advisor for selection of appropriate courses.

Choose one concentration, 15 Hours:


At least 9 credits must be upper division (300- and 400-level) coursework. Students may not apply the same course both to the Global Studies core required courses or regional electives and to the concentration.

Global Governance and Peace concentration

By completion of this concentration, a student would have:

  • in-depth multidisciplinary knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon of ‘governance without government’ in global and regional affairs, principles and patterns of organization of the modern international system, and traditional and modern conceptions of security.
  • the ability to understand and evaluate different cultural, ethical, and political perspectives of subjects and issues of global governance and peace.
  • the ability to formulate research questions and hypotheses and conduct basic academic research addressing a significant problem of global governance and peace.

Core Curriculum requirement for this concentration: PSCI 100  Politics and Government.

Global Economics and Development concentration

By completion of this concentration, a student would have the ability to:

  • understand the global economy and the interconnectedness of countries of the world.
  • understand the impact of domestic and international institutions and policies on economies and economic development.
  • understand and present varied perspectives on issues of global economics and development.

Core Curriculum requirement for this concentration: ECON 205  Principles of Macroeconomics.

Global Environments concentration

By completion of this concentration, a student would have the ability to:

  • explain basic concepts, models, and theories of human interactions with their environments and analyze and problem solve global environmental issues.
  • understand the differences in perception, use, and care of global environments.
  • demonstrate the ability to evaluate multiple sources and perspectives on environmental issues that transcend national boundaries.

Core Curriculum requirement for this concentration: ENVS 201 , ENVS 201L  and ENVS 202 , ENVS 202L .

Culture in History and the Global Age concentration

By completion of this concentration, a student would be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and respect for global cultures and cultural orientations different from their own.
  • demonstrate cultural self-awareness and intercultural competence for effective and appropriate interactions in a variety of cultural contexts in the global community.
  • ask questions, conduct research, and articulate responses that reflect multiple cultural perspectives.

Core Curriculum requirements for this concentration: GEOG 105  or ANTH 203 .

Notes:


Language

The student is required to complete 12 semester hours in the same foreign language OR demonstrate competence in that language by achieving a score specified by the department on a standardized language examination and by passing an interview with the modern language faculty.

International Experience

Each student will participate in an international experience appropriate to his or her concentration and/or language study for the major. The international experience must be at least six weeks in length and outside the U.S., approved in advance by the Global Studies Director, and be part of a program or partnership authorized by Shepherd University. In rare instances the Director may approve a shorter international experience. An international experience may take a variety of forms, e.g., semester abroad or at sea; summer immersion courses; teaching practicum; international volunteer work; and an international internship.
