Chemistry, B.S.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

The chemistry program is designed to meet the needs of future chemists as well as students seeking graduate degrees in the sciences or professional degrees in pharmacy or medicine, dental, or veterinary fields.  The curriculum is rooted in the five traditional areas of chemistry - analytical, physical, inorganic, organic, and biochemistry and emphasizes both physics and calculus as part of the degree.  Each student will also gain independent research skills by carrying out an individualized in-lab project as the capstone and writing in the major course.

Chemistry offers multiple concentrations to fit each student’s goals: Traditional Track (with choice of a minor), Biochemistry (comprehensive), Biopharmaceutical Sciences (comprehensive), and Environmental Chemistry (comprehensive).

Comprehensive Major in Chemistry-Biopharmaceutical Sciences Concentration

The biopharmaceutical sciences concentration degree program will prepare Shepherd students for admission into either the School of Pharmacy program at West Virginia University or at Shenandoah University. Those students will receive their bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Shepherd through the transfer of specified first-year pharmacy courses from the WVU School of Pharmacy (SOP) or from the Shenandoah School of Pharmacy (SOP) after successfully completing their first professional year in the pharmacy program.
