Program Learning Outcomes for Art Education 

  • To develop innovative cultural producers with conceptually, stylistically, and contextually grounded compositional skills demonstrating artistic integrity and competence. 
  • To comprehensively prepare teacher candidates for careers in public school art education according to accreditation standards. 
  • To develop the capacity to advocate for the visual arts and articulate its role in society to the broader community. 
  • To provide a strong authentic art making and intellectual foundation for future graduate school study in the visual arts and/or art education.

Curriculum for a Teaching Field in Art, PreK-Adult


The art education program adheres to a contemporary pedagogy that hones future teachers to be artists, scholars, and advocates of/for the arts. A student who wishes to earn a Bachelor of Arts-Secondary Education degree with a teaching field in art education must take the following courses: Core Curriculum  (42 credits), educational professional studies courses  (30), fine arts core and concentration (42), and art education (11). All additional upper division courses must be approved by the specialization coordinator.
