Art Comprehensive, B.F.A.


Shepherd University offers a program in art leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.  The program offers four different concentrations:  painting, graphic design, photography / computer imagery, and sculpture.   In addition, the department offers a program of study in the teaching field of Art Education (PreK-Adult) for students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education. Details on the teaching field of Art Education (Pre-K-Adult) can be found under the “Teaching Fields” section of the Catalogue. 

The purpose of the program includes the following:

  1. To expose the students to the significant theories, trends, and principles that structure practices of contemporary art and design. 
  2. To teach students to work conceptually, while mastering the technical skills necessary to fully prepare them for careers in creative fields.
  3. To help students to become visual problem solvers, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, foster an awareness of professional practices and expectations, and establish opportunities for learning outside the classroom. 

 

Curriculum for a Comprehensive Major in Art (Contemporary)


Total hours required (including free electives), 120 Hours:


Core Curriculum, 42 Hours:


All art majors must take  ART 103  for their Core Curriculum Tier 2 Arts requirement.

Fine arts core, 27 Hours:


Foundations Core, 9 Hours:

Professional practices core, 9 Hours:

In order to progress and to graduate the student enrolled in any B.F.A. concentration must receive a minimum of a C in each course within the concentration, a minimum grade of C in ART 208 - Professional Practices I  and ART 490 - Capstone .
