EDUC 443 - Literacy in the Content Areas(3 cr) Required for all teacher candidates seeking certification in a secondary teaching specialization field, this course concentrates on literacy instruction in all content areas of the curriculum. Attention is focused on the academic language demands (both affective and cognitive) of disciplinary literacy as they related to subject-specific content learning and the learning needs of diverse students. The implementation of appropriate language supports for reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing are explored, along with various research-supported literacy strategies appropriate to the development of comprehension and vocabulary in integrated content-area instruction. Previously titled Reading in the Content Area. Prerequisites: EDUC 370 ; Prerequisite/corequisite: Special Methods course for teacher candidate’s content area; Corequisite: EDUC 375 and EDUC 400 .
