BIOL 418 - Virology

(4 cr) A upper-level lecture and laboratory course in which the nature of viruses and their interactions with prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and organisms are presented. Course content will include viral structure, replication, and viral effects at the cellular and organismal level.  Discussions will include topics of viral virulence, the disease states produced by animal viruses in their hosts, antiviral therapies, mechanisms of viral immunity, and viral epidemiology.  Laboratory exercises will demonstrate the development and maintenance of animal cell cultures, viral cytopathic effects, determination of viral titer, viral neutralization assays, immunological detection of viruses, and analysis of viral structural components.   Prerequisites: BIOL 305 , or permission of instructor. Prerequisite/corequisite: BIOL 344
