The Master of Arts in Teaching Program is a 39-credit hour program of study that provides students with a comprehensive education that will enable them to become successful educators. This program will lay the foundation to produce graduates who are knowledgeable, competent, accountable, and ethical. The overall goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for prospective teachers to engage in professional education and decision-making based on inquiry and reflective practice in order to meet the challenges of an ever-expanding educational, social, and political responsibilities of the teaching profession.

Retention and Certification Review

Following full admission to graduate studies, the success and progress of MAT teacher candidates are reviewed at two points in the program:  Retention (the semester prior to student teaching) and Certification Review (after completing student teaching).  See MAT Program Handbook for details.

 

Pre-Student Teaching Field Experiences

The State of West Virginia requires that each teacher candidaate complete a minimum of 125 hours of pre-student teaching field experiences across programmatic levels in classrooms consistent with the candidate’s declared area of specialization. These hours are tied to designated coursework.  See MAT Program Handbook for details.

 

Specialization Requirements

All specialization requirements, listed as program prerequisites in the MAT Program Handbook, must be completed, AND the state-designated Content PRAXIS exam for the candidate’s designated specialization must be passed prior to student teaching.
