Social Studies Teaching Field Grades 5-Adult, B.A.

The social studies program is intended primarily for students preparing to teach in middle or high schools. These curricula provide a multi-disciplinary foundation for prospective teachers who enter integrated social studies educational situations.

Program goals
  • To identify concepts, tools of inquiry and trends within the field of social studies.
  • To adapt instruction to various learning styles and cultural backgrounds.
  • To use diverse instructional strategies, including technology, that highlight critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • To organize and create lessons based upon content knowledge, curriculum goals, and state/national standards.
  • To create formal and informal assessment strategies related to their planning and instruction.
  • To demonstrate knowledge in social studies disciplines (history, political science, geography, sociology, economics, and psychology)
  • To conduct instruction, planning, and assessments in social studies classrooms via multiple field experiences.
  • To successfully apply for state licensure to teach social studies in grades 5-12 in the state of West Virginia.
