Social Studies Teaching Field Grades 5-Adult, B.A.

The social studies program is intended primarily for students preparing to teach in middle or high schools. These curricula provide a multi-disciplinary foundation for prospective teachers who enter integrated social studies educational situations.

Program goals

To identify concepts, tools of inquiry and trends within the field of social studies.
To adapt instruction to various learning styles and cultural backgrounds.
To use diverse instructional strategies, including technology, that highlight critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
To organize and create lessons based upon content knowledge, curriculum goals, and state/national standards.
To create formal and informal assessment strategies related to their planning and instruction.
To demonstrate knowledge in social studies disciplines (history, political science, geography, sociology, economics, and psychology)
To conduct instruction, planning, and assessments in social studies classrooms via multiple field experiences.
To successfully apply for state licensure to teach social studies in grades 5-12 in the state of West Virginia.
