2018-2019 Shepherd University Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

Environmental Studies Comprehensive, B.S.

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary program that investigates interactions between humans and their environment. This includes physical and biological aspects in addition to the highly modified human-made environments such as urban and agricultural systems. The Comprehensive Environmental Studies major provides students an integrative foundation in biology, physical sciences, technologies, earth systems and humanities and social sciences needed to understand interactions between humans and their environment. Students also have the option of selecting a concentration in Aquatic Sciences, Environmental Geomatics, or Sustainable Resource Management.

Environmental Geomatics Concentration, 74-79 Hours:

The Environmental Geomatics concentration provides students in depth understanding of geographic information systems, remote sensing and other data collection technologies and the fundamental skills needed to study geospatial environmental issues that integrate social, economic, physical, and biological systems. Students graduating with specialization in Environmental Geomatics are prepared to conduct resource monitoring and management, to study complex environmental problems at local and global scales, and to inform environmental policy. This concentration equips students for immediate employment in either the private or public sector.

In addition to the Environmental Core and Portfolio Requirements, above, students will complete the following:

Sustainable Food Production Concentration, 74-75 Hours:

The Sustainable Food Production concentration students provides fundamental knowledge in environmental science, soil, water and pest management science and essential practical experience in agricultural economics and production techniques that are environmentally, socially and economically viable. The concentration prepares students to launch a successful sustainable agriculture production enterprise or for employment in the organic and sustainable food industry, in global, national and state governmental agencies, and in non-governmental organizations promoting sustainable food production.

In addition to the Environmental Core and Portfolio requirements, above, students will complete the following:

Additional Required Courses, 22 Hours:

Elective Courses, 40-41 Hours:

Electives, 7 Hours:

NOTES:

* PHYS 302  can be applied only once within the program: EITHER in Complementary Sciences OR in Technological Applications for Agriculture.

** CHEM 209 , CHEM 209L , BIOL 315 , BIOL 363 , and BIOL 412  have prerequisites.

Sustainable Resource Management Concentration, 74 Hours:

The sustainable resource management concentration provides the student with a strong, interdisciplinary background in the environmental arena and explores ways of meeting humanity’s current and future needs for energy, food and shelter that are scientifically, socially, and economically viable and that do not compromise earth’s resources and ecological systems. Upon completing this option, students will be able  to investigate and implement policies relating to the environment and natural resource conservation. This concentration prepares students to work in state and national parks, undertake environmental advocacy, develop programs for cultural and physical resource management and education, and continue study at the graduate level.

In addition to the Environmental Core and Portfolio Requirements, above, students will complete the following:

Elective Courses, 47 Hours:
