SOWK 311 - Social Work Methods I

(4cr) An introduction to the basic interviewing techniques and skills utilized in social work practice. The mechanics of conducting interviews, gathering information, and making assessments as well as recording interviews will be covered. Techniques used in one-to-one interviews, cross-cultural interviews, social assessments, and termination are discussed. This process is examined according to the principles of the structural approach and short-term interventions such as the solution-focused model and motivational interviewing. Students are expected to conduct and record a series of practice interviews, culminating in a standardized client interview which is filmed and reviewed by the student, faculty and peers. Students also participate in lab intensives to reinforce use of skills in role plays. Roles of the social worker in staging interventions on the micro level in the context of responsibility for macro level charge are stressed. Previously offered at 3cr. Prerequisites: SOWK 201  and SOWK 300 .
