  • MUSC 327 - Conducting II - Choral

    (3 cr) A study of the art, technique, and problems relative to conducting and administering choral performing organizations. While public school choral ensembles receive the majority of attention, all other choral organizations are considered. Opportunities are available for practical experiences in conducting and related field observations of area performing ensembles. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor; MUSC 203  and MUSC 227 .
  
  • MUSC 328 - Advanced Instrumental Conducting

    (1cr) A study of the art, techniques, and challenges of conducting instrumental ensembles. Score study and preparation, stylistic considerations, and development of refined techniques are central elements of this course. Opportunities are available for practical experience in conducting University ensembles and for observing area performing ensembles. Previously offered as a 3-credit course. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor; MUSC 203  and MUSC 227 .
  
  • MUSC 329 - Electronic Music Media

    (1 cr) This course is an introduction to the wide variety of electronic and computer music tools available to the musician. It includes an introduction to MIDI, synthesizers, sequencing, notation, and sound reinforcement tools and techniques. Analog and digital recording techniques are also covered.  Previously 2cr. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor; MUSC 203 .
  
  • MUSC 330 - Recording Techniques

    (2 cr) This is a hands-on recording techniques course. Topics include mike placement strategies, mixing methods, and analog, digital, and CD recording. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor;MUSC 329 .
  
  • MUSC 331 - Instrument Care and Repair

    (2 cr) Designed for the instrumental student who intends to teach. Laboratory experience in the maintenance and repair of band instruments is coupled with a general review of the performance basics. Permission of instructor. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor or permission of instructor.

    (1 cr) The study of the evolution of brass music; designed for music majors to acquaint them with the literature for brass instruments.   • MUSC 340 - Advanced Topics in Western Music

    (3 cr) This course is intended to be an extension of the Western music history curriculum and will involve a more in-depth study of selected composers and genres.   • MUSC 341 - Advanced Topics in World Music

    (3 cr) This course is intended to be an extension of the world music component in MUSC 312  and will involve a more in-depth study of selected non-Western musical cultures including those of India, Indonesia, and Africa. This course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor with  ; non-music majors must complete MUSC 111  with a grade of C or better.
  
  • MUSC 342 - American Music

    (3 cr) An extensive survey of the rich variety of music found throughout the history of the United States. The course will begin with the music of the early Puritans and continue through the works of contemporary composers. The survey will incorporate music listening assignments, paper presentations, a class lecture-recital, and visits to area concerts featuring American composers and performers. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor with  ; non-music majors must complete MUSC 111  with a grade of C or better.
  
  • MUSC 343 - Special Topics in Musicology

    (1-3 cr) This course allows for in-depth focus on a particular musicological topic. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor with   or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 344 - Orchestra Literature

    (3cr) A survey of popular orchestral literature from the Baroque Era to present times through the study of scores, recordings, and reading assignments.
  
  • MUSC 345 - Wind Band Literature

    (2cr) A survey of wind band literature from the Baroque Era to present times through the study of scores, recordings, and reading assignments.
  
  • MUSC 346 - Chamber Literature

    (2cr) A survey of popular chamber literature from the Baroque Era to present times through the study of scores, recordings, and reading assignments. This includes music written for mixed instrumental ensembles ranging from 3 to 20 players.
  
  • MUSC 350 - Music Psychology

    (3 cr) A thorough survey of the rapidly growing field of music psychology. The course is divided into three different sections that include a detailed look at various contemporary issues in the field, a discussion of contemporary research methodology, including experimental design and analysis, and an overview of landmark studies. Highly recommended for music majors and psychology majors as well as non-majors with music experience. Prerequisites: Music major or minor, or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 351 - Jazz Arranging

    (2cr) This course is designed to provide methods of arranging for small and large jazz ensembles. Includes study of notation conventions, score layout, transpositions, and voicing techniques as well as a survey of composers and arrangers in the idiom. Prerequisites: MUSC 245  or permission of instructor.
  
  • MUSC 352 - Advanced Jazz Theory and Improvisation

    (3cr) This course is designed as a survey of contemporary jazz harmonic and melodic practices. Topics covered include harmonic substitution, advanced harmonic alteration, motivic development, contemporary modal jazz harmony, and non-traditional improvisation systems. Prerequisites: MUSC 245 .
  
  • MUSC 360 - Movement for Singers

    (1cr) Singers in this class will learn about the principles of stage movement and adapting one’s body appropriately to different roles and songs, without interfering with proper vocal technique.  Previously MUSC 210 (2cr).
  
  • MUSC 363 - German Diction

    (1cr) This course is designed for music students with voice as their major instrument and covers instruction in and application of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and proper pronunciation and enunciation of the German language while singing.  Previously MUSC 213.
  
  • MUSC 364 - French Diction

    (1cr) This course is designed for music students with voice as their major instrument and covers instruction in and application of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and proper pronunciation and enunciation of the French language while singing. Previously MUSC 214.
  
  • MUSC 373 - German Lied

    (1cr) Students taking this course will engage in a survey of repertoire for the voice in the German language. Students are strongly encouraged to take this course simultaneously with German Diction. Previously MUSC 223. Repeatable up to a maximum of 2 credits.

  • MUSC 420 - Apprenticeship in Music Pedagogy

    (1-3 cr) Allows students to get firsthand experience in the practices and materials required to become the instructors of the future. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor with   or permission of instructor; MUSC 314 , MUSC 320 .
  
  • MUSC 421 - Music Research and Independent Study

    (1-3 cr) Qualified juniors or seniors may pursue a course of independent study in their major area under the supervision of the appropriate faculty advisor. Students selected must exhibit outstanding ability and scholarship in their chosen area and must meet the requirements for the Independent Study Program as outlined elsewhere in this Catalog.   • MUSC 498 - Senior Music Seminar

    (1 cr) This seminar is a capstone course designed to review and synthesize knowledge and skills gained through music course work leading to the senior year in music. Students will prepare for and take an appropriate examination that assesses the student’s knowledge. Prerequisites: Declared music major or music minor.

      Prerequisite/corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in the culminating courses in the music core curriculum.

  • MUAP 497 - Senior Music Activity

    (.5-1 cr) All music majors are required to complete a senior music activity during the final year. Prior to the middle of the second semester of junior standing, a determination as to the nature of the activity is made by the student’s advisor after consultation with the other music staff members. The Senior Music Activity will assume the form of a recital, lecture-recital, project, or recital-project. Details are on file in the office of the department chair.   • MUAP 601 - Applied Conducting

    (1 cr) This course is a weekly lesson in advanced conducting. Students will work one-on-one with the professor to hone the technique and craft of conducting. Students will employ techniques gained here in classroom experiences with their own ensembles. Reflections of this course will appear in the student’s portfolio. Course may be repeated up to three times for credit.
  
  • MUAP 602 - Applied Accompanying

    (1 cr) Applied accompanying is a course designed primarily for keyboard majors at the graduate level. The class will focus on the improvement on piano skills in the areas of vocal and instrumental collaboration in solo and ensemble literature, sight-reading and piano ensemble literature. In addition to required repertoire for the class, students will work with the instructor to select repertoire that they are currently using in their work environment. In addition to weekly lessons, students will also be expected to attend appropriate concerts and master classes on campus, as well as four studio master class sessions throughout the semester. Course may be repeated up to a maximum of three credits.
  
  • MUAP 603 - Recital

    (1 cr) In lieu of a thesis, this recital can be combined with two credits of MUAP 601  and used as a culminating project for the master’s program. A minimum of sixty minutes of prepared music by the candidate’s school ensemble, complete with prepared scores, program notes and other research is required. Course may be repeated up to a maximum of three credits.

  • MUEN 173 - Piano Ensemble and Accompanying

    (1 cr) This course is designed to teach the art of collaborative music making. Pianists, singers, and instrumentalists, whether majors or non-majors, are welcome to sign up for this class. The focus (i.e., art song literature, four-hand piano music, or musical theater) is announced prior to the beginning of each semester. Students are assigned to ensemble teams that work in the class and in independent practice sessions to develop their sight-reading, accompanying, diction, and performance-practice skills. This course may be repeated for credit. Permission of the instructor is required to register for this class. For freshmen only. MUEN 1XX courses are repeatable to a maximum of 3 credits.
  
  • MUEN 174 - Women’s Camerata/Men’s Choir

    (1 cr) Separate choral ensembles for men and women alone, covering literature from all periods of music history and occasionally performing joint works. Performance schedule includes campus and local performances. For freshmen only. MUEN 1XX courses are repeatable to a maximum of 3 credits.
  
  • MUEN 175 - Masterworks Chorale

    (1 cr) Mass choir performing large choral works often with orchestra. One performance per semester. Open to all campus and community singers. No audition required. For freshmen only. MUEN 1XX courses are repeatable to a maximum of 3 credits.
  
  • MUEN 176 - Chamber Singers

    (1 cr) Choral ensemble of 20 to 30 singers. Specializing in literature from all periods of music history. Performance schedule includes campus and local performances. Generally one or two performances per semester. Audition required. For freshmen only. MUEN 1XX courses are repeatable to a maximum of 3 credits.
  
  • MUEN 177 - Contemporary Vocal Ensemble

    (1 cr) Ensemble of 8 to 16 covering all areas of contemporary music including jazz, blues, and Broadway. Emphasis is placed on the correct vocal style for each genre and public performance. Solo singing is highly encouraged. Active performance schedule includes on-campus performance and recruiting tours throughout the region. Rhythm section players are included as part of the group.
