Return to Programs of Study Return to: Programs of Study

The Appalachian studies minor is an interdisciplinary minor that is designed to make students aware of the rich and varied traditions of and the cultural and environmental influences on the geographical area knows as Appalachia. Students often attach the minor to degrees in history, English, environmental science, recreation and leisure studies, sociology, and other degrees with an associated connection with this geographic area.

Curriculum for a Minor in Appalachian Studies

Total hours required, 15-16 Hours:

Note(s):

* Students can select no more than 3 credit hours from any single discipline for the minor; however, APST courses that are clearly labeled as interdisciplinary (such as APST 343 Appalachian Music and APST Folk Tales and Storytelling) should be counted as separate and distinct disciplines. Students will work with their advisors and the Coordinator of the Appalachian Studies Minor to select from the courses above elective courses of study that complement both their specific interests and majors, as well as courses that fulfille the interdisciplinary nature of the minor.
