Policy for Participating in Commencement Ceremonies

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students who have not yet fulfilled all requirements for graduation may participate in the May commencement ceremony as long as they are, as of the time of the May commencement ceremony, in good academic standing* and have yet to complete no more than two courses, totaling no more than nine credit hours.

Students must have already applied for graduation for either that May or the following August. Student names will be listed in the commencement program without Latin honors and will be noted as August candidates. They will be listed again in a future commencement program after they have completed all degree requirements, with Latin honors as appropriate; however, they may not participate again in commencement.

*The phrase “good academic standing” for undergraduate students means that when final grades are assessed, student must have earned at least a 2.0 GPA for all courses (cumulative GPA), Shepherd courses (institutional GPA), courses presented to satisfy requirements in the major, and courses presented to satisfy requirements in the minor. Additionally, selected professional programs have additional stipulations for minimum GPA and other requirements for graduation.

Graduate Students

Graduate students who have not yet fulfilled all requirements for graduation may participate in the May graduate commencement ceremony as long as they are, as of the time of the May graduate commencement ceremony, in good academic standing* and have yet to complete no more than one course for Master’s students and no more than two courses for Doctoral students.

Students must have already applied for graduation for either that May or the following August. Students will be noted in the program as August candidates. After they have completed all degree requirements, they will be listed again in a future graduate commencement program, but may not participate again in commencement.
